Rice Theater

The Rice Theater is a professional level facility with lighting and sound equipment found only in the finest theaters. This room is built as a traditional proscenium stage, and has a 24x26 performing space, with large wing spaces and backstage area. Immediately behind the performance area is the Stage Shop, fully equipped, with an opening directly onto the stage so sets and equipment can be moved from the shop to the main stage.

The stage is illuminated by 110 lighting instruments, including Source 4s, Parnels and Cyc Lights. The curtain legs are on a slide and swivel system. The five stage electrics are raised and lowered by electrical winches, so the lights can be gelled, aimed and focused from the floor level. There are numerous microphone and monitor jacks spaced around and in the stage, as well as power-point receptacles in the downstage floor. The stage is also equipped with a 16’ screen that lowers from the top of the proscenium arch.

Sound in the theater is provided by 17 JBL speakers, arranged in a Surround Sound configuration, with 32,000 watts of power. At any time, 20 microphones and monitors can be powered and controlled by the Allen & Heath GL3300 sound mixer. The board is equipped with 32 channels and numerous sub-groups. The control booth also has recording capability, using either tape or cd, and the projector system is controlled by a Lexicon unit.
